CHAPTER 26

SYDNEY

Could it really be this simple? Could all the answers of the last four years be in this file?

But if that were the case, and Dad knew who it was, why didn’t he stop him when he found out, or when he suspected who the person was?

I have a feeling this isn’t the ending we were looking for. My stomach sinks as the doubts fill my thoughts.

“Sydney?” Kyler takes my hand in his. “Sydney, are you alright?”

I take in a ragged breath and nod. “Yeah, I just have a feeling we’re not going to get all the answers we are looking for.”

“Why would you think that?” Becca comes around the desk to look at the file with us.

Is Kyler thinking the same thing? I glance over at him and say. “I think if he had known who was behind it, he would’ve had them locked up. What I think is that he might’ve had an idea... but maybe no hard proof.”

He makes a sweeping gesture, indicating the file lying on the desk, his eyes lock with mine. “I think you’re right. We might be in the same place as we were at the beginning. I think we have to dig further to get the full story.”

I shift my gaze to the two guys tied up in the hall. I realize there isn’t any reason to postpone the inevitable. “Well, let’s see what all the fuss is about,” I say.

My heart hammers against my already bruised ribs, and nervously take the file flipping it open.

Upon realizing I’m holding my breath, I slowly exhale as I begin to read my father’s notes.

Baby girl, I’m sorry I couldn’t get to the bottom of this.

My gut twists, sinking at his disheartening words. We were right. This isn’t the end. I continue reading.

I know you must be scared. Lean on your mother and Kyler for your strength.

I had the notes analyzed here at the station. There were no prints on the paper other than yours and mine. They were printed by an impact printer. Those are not as readily used as laser or ink jet. Most are outdated with the new software in computers and the clarity of laser printers these days. Places that still use them are freight and courier companies, payroll companies, rental car companies, hotels, some doctors’ offices, Hell, anywhere they need to use multi-part forms. I’m sorry I couldn’t narrow it down further.

I think there’s a bad cop on the force, but I can’t figure out who it is.

I contacted the FBI with my theories, but at the time of this note, no one there has gotten back to me.

I know we talked about this when you first came to me, but did someone give you anything to hold, or did you find something that someone could have lost? What were you doing right before the notes started to arrive? Think hard. It might be as simple as something you have right in front of you.

Think about what was going on at that time.
